These wonderfully decorative patterns on paper, known as Chiyogami or Yuzen, are silkscreened onto machinemade sheets of mixed kozo (fibers from the bark of the mulberry tree).
Originally, Chiyogami designs were developed in the Edo period (1603-1867) as woodblock prints. They were based on the bright kimono textiles, which the papermakers from the countryside saw on the fashionable wealthier ladies in the larger cities, especially in Kyoto.
The striking pigment colors, careful registration of screens, and wide range of designs make these very fine Japanese papers perfect for a multitude of arts & crafts; including handbound books, origami, handmade greeting cards, shadow boxes, collage, picture mats, box-making, and scrapbooking.
