Description

The Sunset Moth is a common day-flying moth in its native Madagascar. It flies all year but can be found in enormous numbers from May to July when gigantic waves of sunset moths have been said to be the most beautiful display in the animal kingdom.

In the Victorian era, the wings of this species were used in jewelry making. As the caterpillar's foodplant is poisonous, it is thought to be distasteful to predators, perhaps accounting for its large numbers.

Form and Pheromone is an exciting company created by artist Christopher Marley.  Form stands for the symmetrical structure of his art and Pheromone, for the chemical stimulant that insects use to attract one another.   Christopher travels the earth collecting unusual and beautiful insects in order to create his wonderful minimalist works of art.  His designs are both contemporary and architectural, as well as conservation-friendly.

Entomologists have long affirmed that it is not the collecting of insects out of the wild that adversely affects their populations, but the destruction of their habitats and hostplants (the plant an insect species requires to reproduce). Leading environmentalists and entomologists agree that insect collecting can actually aid in the preservation of insect species by offering an economic incentive to preserve the habitat in which this “sustainable rainforest crop” thrives.

Writing for National Geographic in January of 2001, Ronald Cave agrees:

“With such a bounty on (insect) heads, some conservationists worry that populations could be depleted by the trade. But our research suggests otherwise.

Catching insects isn't like hunting Jaguars. Millions of (insect) eggs, larvae and pupae remain underground, while collectors take only adults... The biggest threat to scarabs is not insect hobbyists, but loss of habitat as tropical forests are converted to farms. We believe that regulated beetle collecting by local people -- and in time, beetle farming -- could actually help slow this process."
