| Tansu is proud to present Paper Planes an exhibit by Austin-based artist Kevin Box. Box marries paper and metal to create bronze sculptures with origami influences for a contemporary fusion of both mediums. Included in the Tansu exhibition will be a signature piece Crane Unfolding, an 8-foot tall sculpture of an origami crane unfolding into a star. This crane reveals the meaning of life as it unfolds into a star, says Box. It symbolizes the complex and intelligent design just below the surface of everything seen in creation. It sums up most of my work. To create his sculpture, Box folds and unfolds paper models before casting them into bronze, resulting in sculptures that celebrate the delicacy of paper in a durable, museum quality finish. By marrying paper and bronze, my work refreshes the way both mediums have been seen. Bronze becomes light and weightless and paper becomes a lasting, outdoor medium says Box. |

| Box, in collaboration with master origami artist Kyle Fu of Houston, will also introduce his new origami bronze series Painted Ponies. Kyle and Kevin met at Tansus Origami Festival last July in Houston. Together in Austin they explored ideas and adapted their Pony from an original horse design created by Kyle. A portion of the proceeds from the Pony series helps support the opening of an origami museum Kyle is establishing in Houston. Lara Hill-Pavlik, owner of Tansu, sums up Kevin Boxs unique sculptures: While origami itself is an ancient artform, the works are fleeting due to the delicate nature of paper. Kevins interpretation of origami in bronze affords a sense of weight and permanence that is simply unattainable to paper artists. A cocktail reception with the artist will be offered on Tuesday, March 28th from 6-8pm as well as on Saturday, April 15th from 6-8pm. View article & images on Houston Chronicle online: chron.com |
