Tansu in the Houston Heights is proud to present its third annual festival celebrating origami, the ancient art of Japanese paper folding. This year a portion of the festival’s proceeds and events will go to benefit the Sunshine Kids Foundation, a non-profit Houston based charity dedicated to providing positive group activities and emotional support for children with cancer. Master origami artists Linda Mihara and Joel Cooper will be featured this year teaching a multitude of workshops, displaying their artwork, and providing origami instruction to the Sunshine Kids! In addition, the Houston public will be invited to fold origami cranes for and make donations to the Sunshine Kids. Workshops and unique origami models will also be offered by Houston’s finest origami artists including Joan Son, T.J. Fu, Jayson Merrill, Ping Lau, and Sandy Atha. The festival will run from June 30th – July 8th with a cocktail reception on Saturday, June 30th from 6-8pm. |

| Fold a special origami crane for the Sunshine Kids! In the Asian traditions, the crane is a symbol of peace and long life and it is believed that folding 1000 origami paper cranes makes a wish come true. We are inviting you to fold origami cranes for and make donations to the Sunshine Kids Foundation to help make their wishes come true. Instructions on how to fold the origami crane as well as a special piece of origami paper designed by master origami artist Linda Mihara is available for download free of charge. On this special origami paper, you can write a wish or positive thought on top of the wings of the origami crane. These cranes can be mailed to or brought into Tansu and once all the cranes are collected, they will be presented to the Sunshine Kids. We are hoping to collect thousands of these cranes for the children, so please fold as many as you wish and please tell and email your friends to do the same. Click here for details. |

Headlining Tansu’s 2007 Origami Festival will be master origami artists Linda Mihara and Joel Cooper. Joel was recently awarded the “Florence Temko Award” by OrigamiUSA due to his innovative work in origami tessellation. His ingenious use of origami tessellation to create realistic human faces must literally be seen to be believed and gained him world recognition in 2006. Linda Mihara is also world renown for her ground breaking innovations in the art of “Connected Cranes” where a single sheet of paper is carefully cut then folded, forming multiple cranes that are still attached to one another. She holds the honor of creating the world’s first 3D connected-crane models named the “Peace Sphere”, the 3D “Crane Cube”, and the 3D “Crane Pyramid”. Robert J. Lang is considered by many to be one of the top origami artists in the world, pioneering the cross-disciplinary marriage of origami with mathematics. He is noted for designs of great detail and realism, and includes in his repertoire some of the most complex origami designs ever created. Mr. Lang will be displaying some of his fabulously innovated origami at this year’s origami festival in Houston!
The festival’s workshops will range from beginning models for the origami novice, to advanced models that will enhance the skills of even experienced ‘folders’. Also included will be several origami installations. The first is of the world’s largest origami dragon, designed by local artist T.J. Fu, measuring 18 feet. The second is of hundreds of origami butterflies that magically “fly” from the ground floor up the stairs, and the third is a Cherry Blossom tree that combines the art of origami with ancient Chinese painting techniques.
